About

YesterMorrow is a 2D platformer, where Super Mario meets Legends of Zelda in a complete package of platformer gameplay, rock solid responsivity, action sequences, adventure and puzzle elements, all wrapped in an engaging story with multiple endings.

Our young hero sets on a journey across timelines to confront an unknown and dangerous world. She has to save her family and her world itself. This can be done only by repairing the mysterious time tower controlling the cycle of time.

Gameplay

The player enjoyment in YesterMorrow consists of two parts: joy from movement and joy from exploration.

The movement mechanics contain classic set of controls, which can be expected from a solid platformer. Plus words like double jump, stomp, roll, dash or wall jump don’t have to be explained to any fan of the classic platformer games. Additional, the main protagonist of YesterMorrow can use a variety of items, which interact with the environment or can be used in combat. Last but not least, players can truly test their skills in a selection of challenging bosses.

The levels invite players for exploration: they are full of secret areas and can be played in any order, which player desires. Every of the nonlinear levels contains one of the special abilities, so as players progress through the game their hero becomes stronger and stronger. Players choices can also impact the end of the game, so there are multiple endings.

One of the most important aspects of exploration is playing on two timelines, where players can switch between past and present and use this ability to overcome challenges and puzzles.

Level design follows the proven Japanese narrative technique Kishōtenketsu, which was used by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto in creation of the Mario and Zelda games.

Setting

The world of YesterMorrow is set in an island land inspired by old Asian kingdoms long ago in an unspecified time period. The land is full ancient technological wonders, but also mystic creatures and powers.
Players will experience this world in two timelines: the past, where live is thriving and blooming and the future, which is scared by a cataclysmic event, which stopped the cycle of time.

Story

As all stories, YesterMorrow begins in past, where our hero, still a little girl, is assigned to the temple of the Timekeepers, where she has to undergo a strange ritual. This ritual is interrupted by the evil Hasatori, who attacks the temple. Tragic as this is, he manages to kill the parents of our hero, but she is not the only one who suffered a tragic loss. The temple was destroyed, which caused a chain reaction, which stopped the cycle of time.

Our hero wakes up in her bed. She is already seventeen. It was a terrible dream, but sadly the consequences were real. Their parents are dead and the world is trapped in an everlasting night. The village is protected by last remains of the eternal light, but outside of the light protection there is too much danger. There are many deadly creatures in the dark.

As she gets up from her bed, she can see her brothers’ note: “Our parents can be still alive! Find me at the bat cave as soon as you can.” Little can she know that these moments mark the beginning of the biggest adventure in her life. An adventure, which can heal not only her family, but also the whole world.

Characters

Hira

YesterMorrow main hero. Her father was a Timekeeper. Traditionally Hiras’ older brother should become the next Timekeeper, but Hira always wanted to be the one. She was always very stubborn and determined. She showed powers of a Timekeeper from early childhood even without any initiation rituals.

Hasatori

He used to be the head of Timekeeper order, but his soul was corrupted by the timeless shadow, which lurks in every man. He became hungry for all power and tried to corrupt the Timekeeper order. He was banished by his formal brothers in a grand battle, which is known as the “battle of the ages”.
Nobody know how he managed to return and damage the time tower, but by doing so, Hasatori plunged the world into an everlasting night.

Timekeepers

They are remnants of an ancient civilization, which has build the marvelous time tower. This enormous structure keeps the cycle of time turning and thus preserves the balance of the local universe.
Timekeeper gifts are very scarce these days. They occur in certain families, so the Timekeeper role is often given from father to son.

Key Features

Rock solid platformer controls
Combining puzzle and action gameplay across two timelines
Night and day cycles, which impact the character of the world and creatures, which can be encountered
Level design based on the Kishōtenketsu technique
Carefully crafted PixelArt art style
Multiple endings

Art

YesterMorrow tries to evoke feelings of nostalgia and the “good old times” of gaming, when life just seemed simpler. There is no other way how to achieve this from an art perspective than pixelart stylization.

The game approaches its artstyle with maximum care and doesn’t use it as an excuse for cheap production. Every element is handcrafted. Respect and care is one aspect of the art direction. The second is also taking some modern aspects like particles and implementing it into pixelart. This creates a vibrant combination, which respects the tradition, but innovates it.

Environments

Wooden Island
It’s the birthplace of the main hero, here is also where the story begins. It’s full of lush green woods and waterfalls.

Desert Island
The Desert Island is home of the Tottori nation. The island is typical for strong wind storms,
which make the life on the island a little bit harder than it should be.

Winter Island
This island is hardly a tourist destination. It’s all frozen most of the year. It’s harsh climate will
have it’s own set of challenges.

Time Tower Island
This island is in the middle of all other islands. It’s connected with other island by
underground passages. The central of the island is the majestic time tower.
